About HPHA

Horsham Preservation & Historical Association

The Horsham Preservation & Historic Association (HPHA) is dedicated to identifying, studying, preserving and protecting the historical heritage, buildings and artifacts of Horsham area.

Peter Choate serves as full time staff for HPHA as on-site caretaker and restoration supervisor at the Penrose-Strawbridge site, as well as being Executive Director. Pete has academic and practical knowledge of historic buildings and their restoration. Pete's late wife, Margaret, founded the organization and passed away in 2017.

HPHA is a member of PANO, the Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations.

Founder

Margaret Choate was the Founder of HPHA. She retired as Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager of Corestates Bank.and was a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Bucks County Community College in the Historic Preservation program in 1998, and was a member of Sigma Phi Kappa, historic preservation honor society. She was also a founding member of the Horsham Historical Advisory Commission.

Margaret passed away in 2017.

Officers

President |Kevin Winters is a long time member, officer and board member of HPHA with a passion for older buildings and local history. Kevin manages and writes the content for our web site and social media and works in digital advertising and content creation.

Vice President| Jennifer McCandless lives in an old farmhouse in Kitnersville and has a strong interest in history based on her interaction with elderly people through her home health care business. Jennifer is Owner/CEO of The Country Homesteads, which provides all aspects of senior care in one of our residential care homes or at home.

Secretary | Jim Cherry - is a resident of Warrington and owner of James Cherry Tree Service. Jim has served as a councilperson in Warrington and is active with local World War II Reenactments.

Treasurer | Curt Kaller of CD Kaller Inc. and Old Philadelphia Historic Restoration Company. Curt is a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, is active in historic house restoration and lives in a restored Victorian home. He also restored the historic {ap80>Novotny House in Horsham. ;

Board of Directors

Peter Choate Past president and member since 1997. University of Delaware, BA in American History. He is a retired computer business systems owner and entrepreneur, and serves as Executive Director of HPHA.

Jennifer McCandless lives in an old famrhouse in Kitnersville and has a strong interest in history based on her interaction with elderly people through her home health care business. Jennifer is Owner/CEO of The Country Homesteads, which provides all aspects of senior care in one of our residential care homes or at home.

Jon Lutz also lives in a old farmhouse in Kitnersville and is an independent film producer with a passionate interest in history. He was a producer on the film Apparition which was filmed on location at the Penrose Strawbridge Farm.

Paulette Shackleton is a long-time resident of Horsham with a great interest in historic buildings - and horses.

Advisors

Margaret Westfield, partner at Westfield Architects & Preservation Consultants. Degree in Architecture, U of Maryland. M.A. Preservation Studies Boston U. Her qualifications exceed the qualification standards for Historical Architects, Architects and Architectural Historians.

George Felbin, member since 1998, Registered Architect in Pennsylvania and New Jersey since 1963. University of Pennsylvania degree in Architecture. Member of National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. Chairman of the Horsham Historical Advisory Commission, and the owner of an Historic home in Horsham.

Herbert Levy Registered Architect, FAIA, Herb is well respected in the historic preservation field. He has served on the board of PHMC, and more recently was president of the Library of Congress' The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER)

Jane Douglass of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services /Fox & Roach, A 26-year veteran in marketing of real estate in Montgomery & Bucks Counties, Jane has sold some of the oldest properties in Montgomery County. Examples are the Circa 1701 ”Rose Hill” in Blue Bell and a Circa 1702 house in Upper Dublin, which was built for colonial Governor Sir William Keith’s tax collector. She is a civil war enthusiast who has completed certification in Historic marketing & Vintage Architecture. Jane is a member of the Historic Real Estate marketing program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Montgomery County Association of Realtors. Jane is also a long time member and publicity chairman of the Historical Society of Fort Washington..

Susan Duhl provides preservation consultations and conservation treatment to institutions and private individuals throughout the United States and internationally. She completed her Master of Art degree and Certificate of Advanced Study in Art Conservation from the State University College at Buffalo Art Conservation Program in 1987, and was named a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic & Artistic Works (AIC) in 1990. Susan is a founding member of the Art Conservator Alliance, formed in 1991.

Jefferson Moak is a professional archivist, historian and genealogist. He has worked at the Map Collection of the Free Library of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Historical Commission, the Philadelphia City Archives, and most recently as senior archivist at the National Archives at Philadelphia. Jeff helped us set up our archives.
