HPHA and the Friends of Graeme Park co-hosted our 1st World War II Reeactment on October 1, 2011. We had gotten rained out twice before but the weather this Saturday was perfect.
Reenactors representing both the German and American sides participated, bringing in tanks, trucks, jeeps, tents and other military equipment which was on display throughout the day.
The highlight of the day was a mock battle. The Penrose Strawbridge property was turned into a farmhouse in German occupied France. The Americans, with a turret mounted machine gun approached the farm coming up the driveway from Graeme Park. The Germans were hunkered down behind the stone farm walls near the Strawbridge barn. A pitched battle raged, a german tank come out of the woods but was disabled by American gunfire. The farm was liberated to the applause of several hundred appreciative spectators.
Both sides then relaxed after the battle with a concert by the The West Chester Swing Kings.
